Books have the power to open doors that many children don’t even know exist. They spark imagination, build confidence, and lay the foundations for lifelong learning. Yet for thousands of children across the UK, this gateway to opportunity is missing. One in 10 children in the UK do not own a single personal book, and the impact of that gap is felt most sharply in communities like Manchester and Salford, where poverty and limited access to educational resources create additional barriers.
The Impact of Book Poverty
Books are far more than educational tools. They shape emotional wellbeing, help children understand the world around them, and offer a safe space to explore feelings and ideas. For children growing up in difficult circumstances, a book can be an escape, a moment of calm, a spark of joy, or a window into a world where anything feels possible.
They also build essential life skills. Through stories, children learn problem solving, perseverance, empathy, and critical thinking, skills that help break the cycle of poverty and open the door to better opportunities in adulthood.
Reading for pleasure is not a luxury; it is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s future success. In fact, it has a greater impact than family circumstances, parental education, or household income. Yet 32.7% of children aged 8 to 18 say they enjoy reading. This marks a 36% decrease in reading enjoyment levels since 2005.
The cost of living crisis has made things even harder. Nearly 64% of parents say they now have less money to spend on books. Without access to books, children miss out on vital literacy development, widening the disadvantage gap even further.
Book Poverty in Manchester and Salford
In Greater Manchester alone, over 90,000 children are affected by poverty. Many do not have the resources they need to learn, grow, and thrive. For these children, a book is not just a pastime, it can be a turning point. A catalyst for curiosity. A boost to confidence. A tool that helps them imagine a future beyond their current circumstances.
Without books, children face additional hurdles in both personal and academic development. With them, they gain the chance to dream, explore, and build the skills that shape brighter futures.
Books Forever: Transforming Futures, One Book at a Time
At Wood Street Mission, we believe every child deserves access to books that inspire, comfort, and empower them. Through our Books Forever project, we provide brand new books to children aged 0–16 across Manchester and Salford, ensuring that no child is left behind simply because they don’t have books at home.
Every book donated helps a child build literacy skills, emotional resilience, and a love of reading, gifts that last far beyond childhood.
