Wood Street Heroes – Sherman William

Why did you want to support Wood Street Mission?

I wanted to help this amazing charity to improve the lives of kids who aren’t as fortunate as my own. The work they do benefits so many people, I just wanted to be able to help.

What did you do?

I ran the Great Manchester Run for 5 years, raising sponsorship from friends and associates from work. Each year I aimed to up the game and raise more than the year before.

To have run the Great Manchester Run 5 times is incredible! What makes you keep coming back to it?

I really enjoy the run, the atmosphere is amazing and I get a buzz from taking part. It’s such an enjoyable day. To be able to challenge myself and raise money for such a good cause in the process, it’s a win win situation.

You do a fantastic job spreading the word and encouraging people to sponsor you, and to raise over £3,000 for our Smart Start project too is just amazing. How does it feel to know how you have made a difference?

I feel over the moon to know how the money I have raised has been used to help children. I am happy to hear that families who might struggle to buy uniform can be helped by this. It was really nice to hear exactly how the money I’ve raised has been spent, as it helps me to really visualise how I have helped.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about taking on a challenge to support Wood Street Mission with their friends, family or colleagues?

Just do it! You won’t regret it. The feeling you get knowing you have helped other people, especially children, is amazing. Go for it!
