Wood Street Heroes – Marcia Leith

What made you decide to support Wood Street Mission?

I wanted to support Wood Street Mission because it’s a really great charity and I think everybody should be able to read books.  They help children who don’t have books.

Can you tell us how you supported Wood Street Mission last year?

I collected second hand books from my Brownies unit and a Readathon challenge which helped me collect money which they use to buy new books.

What was the most fun part of your Readathon?

Probably reading in a den because it made it feel more fun to read a story in a hideout – I still like to do that now.  One time I read in the bath but then I dropped my book.

How did you get your Brownie Guides unit involved?

I made a video telling them about Wood Street Mission and I explained how you collect books and give them to children so they can choose what they want to read.  They helped me a lot by bringing in books they no longer wanted.  I collected them over the course of three weeks – Brown Owl even shared it with other groups so I also got books from Rainbows and other Brownie units.

Why do you think reading is so important?

It can help you with your spelling, grammar and punctuation.  It can also take you to a far away land.  Some books are funny and some teach you something – I like funny books most of all.

What would you say to someone thinking of supporting Wood Street Mission?

I’d say that’s a really good idea because they help children who might not have as many books or as much money as us.  When I see pictures of the book roadshows it reminds me of how lucky we are to have books we want to read.  The book roadshows look really exciting and really happy so I think it’s a good idea to help them put more on for more children to enjoy.
