Right now, a child in Manchester doesn't have the essentials they need - your donation could change that.

Because it’s never just the item itself.

When people think about the support we provide through Family Basics or Christmas, they often picture the item on its own, a pair of shoes, a warm coat, a toy, a book. But the truth is, these things carry far more weight than their size. They shape childhood. They shape confidence. They shape how a child sees themselves in the world.

Take a pair of shoes.
To an adult, it’s a practical purchase. To a child, it’s the difference between joining in and sitting out. Good shoes mean they can run around outside without worrying about wet socks or sore feet. They can go on walks, explore nature, take part in PE, and join in with friends without feeling embarrassed. A simple pair of shoes gives a child the freedom to play, to move, and to belong.

A warm coat does something similar.
It lets a child arrive at school feeling comfortable rather than cold. It means they can play outside at breaktime instead of huddling indoors. It means they can focus on lessons on learning instead of shivering from wet clothes. It helps them blend in rather than stand out.

And then there’s Christmas.
A toy on Christmas morning might seem small in the grand scheme of things, but for a child, it’s a moment of magic. It’s something to talk about when they go back to school. It’s the feeling of being included when everyone else is sharing what Santa brought them. It’s a memory they carry with them, a reminder that they were seen, valued and loved. A toy gives a child a sense of belonging that lasts far beyond December.

And a book, well, a book is its own kind of power.
Not just because it offers an escape into new worlds, but because literacy underpins everything else a child will go on to learn. A book helps build vocabulary, confidence and curiosity. It strengthens the skills they need in every subject, not just reading. It opens doors later in life, to education, to employment, to new opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. A book is never just a story. It’s a stepping stone to a future a child can feel proud of.

When you put all these things together, the shoes, the coat, the toy, the book, you start to see the bigger picture. These aren’t “extras.” They’re the foundations of childhood. They help a child feel safe, confident and included. They help them move through school with their head held a little higher. They help them grow into adults with a sense of self, a sense of belonging, and the belief that they deserve good things.

This is what your support really gives a child. Not just an item, but everything that comes with it.
