Who do we help?

Wood Street Mission is a registered children’s charity and our focus remains unchanged throughout our history. We are here to help alleviate the effects of poverty on local children and their families.

All the families we support live throughout the wards of Manchester and Salford. We cannot at this time stretch our resources to help families in other parts of Greater Manchester (i.e. Tameside, Trafford, Oldham, Rochdale etc)

The vast majority of families we help are born in Manchester and Salford. Sadly many of them we support for many years as they may not have the life skills to enable them to lift themselves out of the poverty trap. Some families however require our help only once until they can get back on their feet and become self sufficient once again. These may include families fleeing domestic violence for example or they may have suffered a house fire and so just need a helping hand at that particular moment.

Did you know that many of our families are also supporters? They donate kids clothing, toys and baby equipment that they no longer need. This allows us to give these goods to someone else in need of help at this time.

How do we help?

We run 5 different projects to help those in need:

   • Community Shop

Help is offered by a referral system whereby a family struggling to provide basic items for their children can access our service once they have been referred by a support worker. This is usually a Health Visitor, Housing Officer, Social Worker or similar. We work with all statutory services and voluntary agencies across Manchester and Salford to ensure as many families as possible in need of our support can be referred for help.

The support we offer is usually as part of an overall support package with the other statutory and voluntary services involved in helping a family during a particularly stressful time in their lives. For instance another agency may be providing a family with new beds for the children, whilst Wood Street Mission can then provide bedding for the beds. These partnerships enable the families’ needs to be met quickly and without duplication, so maximising the donations we receive.

We continually review the various services we offer families to ensure we are providing the most effective support to them at this time. This is done though regular consultation and feedback from both the families visiting us for help as well as from the many support workers we work with throughout the year.

At present Wood Street Mission remains a vital lifeline to many vulnerable families, providing practical help with items they need to lead a normal life. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we remain unique in this area being the only charity to offer these services free of charge at this time.
