Start Smart SmartStart

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our SmartStart appeal.

There was a wonderful response to our appeal which meant we were able to kit out over 2000 children in brand new uniform in time for the new school year

We also had almost 600 family visits to our back-to-school shop which was stocked with donations from individual supporters, community organisations and local businesses, as well as suppliers of school goods.

A generous £15,000 donation from the Brian Kennedy Trust allowed us to purchase over 600 good quality school coats for children aged 3 upwards.

Families who were helped by SmartStart told us the project made a big difference easing the financial burden at an expensive time of year and helping children fit in at school

Almost half said without SmartStart, they would have to go without food or paying the rent, while 37 per cent said they would have to borrow money to buy uniform.

Other families said they would have no option but to send their child to school without uniform, putting them at high risk of being bullied and breaking school rules.

Though parents were often reluctant to ask for help, they were very grateful for the help.  One mum said:” I can’t thank you enough for your support helping ensure my son looks the same as his classmates in smart new uniform.”
