SmartStart Project

SmartStart Manchester & Salford helps kit out children for school so they fit in and want to achieve.

Launched in 2015 it aims to give away one million pounds worth of non-branded school uniform and sports gear over the next four years – enough to give each of the 1 in 3 local children living below the poverty line a school uniform.

Many families struggle to afford school uniform and other school necessities which means their children can be embarrassed or bullied by peers or get into trouble for breaking school rules. This leads to them feeling different and left out which means they can lose interest in doing well at school.

The back-to-school season is especially expensive as it comes at the end of the holidays which involve additional costs and reduced capacity to work because of childcare.

SmartStart helps children fit in and achieve at school by providing their families with practical help with school uniform and other school kit. The summer is its busiest period as we kit out thousands of children for the new school year.
