Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Wood Street Mission has launched a new 5 year strategy focused on breaking the cycle of child poverty.

The strategy, which sets out our direction up to our 150th Anniversary in 2019, will see us develop our education-focused work  to encourage children in low income families engage in and achieve at school.

Children growing up in poverty do not do as well at school as better off peers regardless of ability and are less likely to fulfil their potential. They are more likely to grow up poor either on benefits or in low paid, insecure work.

We want to tackle some of the barriers to education by helping meet more of the costs of going to school and promoting literacy - a passport to a good education - to children and parents.

Our 6 key strategic objectives are:

 - increasing our impact in the delivery of our frontline services.

 - using our assets and resources to develop a sustainable organisation responsive to the needs of local families

-  developing our work to improve the life chances of children living in poverty in Manchester and Salford

-  modernising our services and ways of working so they are in line with best practice

-  increasing our profile in order to generate funds, attract supporters and build relationships

-  raising awareness about poverty in Manchester and Salford  by developing products, events and exhibitions

The new strategy marks a shift in direction from our work in recent years which has focused heavily on poverty alleviation.
