We have launched a competition to choose the design of this fabulous book bench.

We are going to commission an artist to decorate the bench with characters and scenes from one of the following best-selling children’s authors books:

  1.  Lauren Childs
  2. 2. Roald Dahl
  3. Julia Donaldson
  4. David Wallaims

Families who use our services, donors and supporters - and especially their children - are all encouraged to vote.

Votes can be cast on FaceBook, in person at Wood Street Mission, or at our Easter holiday book club. The author who has the most votes at midnight on Sunday 30 April will be the winner.

The bench will be painted thematically in May by a professional artist aided by some young helpers.

It will then form part of a colourful trail of book benches across Manchester city centre during the summer holidays before coming back to a reading corner in our Family Room.

The book bench initiative is part of Read Manchester, an initiative to boost literacy in the city, led by Manchester city council, the National Literacy Trust and the Reading Agency.

Thank you to Carillion NWEP for funding the purchase of the bench.
